Please prepare for this weekend’s winter storm. The largest threats appear to be both the cold and the wind with this system. We have compiled some tips to help keep you safe. We realize the impact of a winter storm remains unclear until it hits the region, but please do prepare and be ready.
If you own pets, please do not leave them outside for long periods. Animal Warden Todd Davitt is urging all owners to have pets on a leash, as the frostbite threat is real with this storm, do not let pets stay outside other than necessary.
Tie down any loose items in your yard.
Customers of FirstEnergy can subscribe for email and text notifications to receive alerts in advance of this storm. More information can be found here: www.firstenergycorp.com/help/communication_tools/html
If the power does go out, please do not use the oven/stove for heating as dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can occur. NEVER OPERATE A GENERATOR INSIDE OF YOUR HOME for build up of carbon monoxide as well.
If you must travel, please make sure to have an emergency kit with you in your vehicle, with items such as flashlight, first aid kit, extra batteries, bottled water, etc.
Know the signs of hypothermia: confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles.
Turn off or unplug major appliances if you lose power, so when the power does come back on, the appliances do not suffer from a power surge.
Please be careful using candles around small children and pets, as open flames pose a danger.
Stay safe, everyone!
