Mayor Annette M. Blackwell

Welcomes you to the

City of Maple Heights website

NEORSD Information

Message from Mayor Blackwell:

The month of May is one of seven months with the length of 31 days.  “Several stories are passed around to show how the month of May was named. The most widely accepted explanation is that it was named for Maia, the Roman goddess of spring and growth. Her name related to a Latin word that means increase or growth.” Retrieved from

What happens in May? Several important celebrations happen in May:

1) Cinco De Mayo. Many Mexican Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5th. It is

the anniversary of the Mexican victory over the French in 1862.

2) Mother’s Day. It was designated by Presidential proclamation, and was recognized

officially by Congress and the President. It is celebrated in honor of Mothers on the second Sunday of May.

3 ) Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday of May. The United States honors the men and women of the military services. The Armed Forces Day Celebration combined the Army, Navy, and the Air Force in 1950. In prior years, they had been held at separate times.

4) Memorial Day or Decoration Day. It is observed in memory of those who died while serving in the United States in war on the last Monday in May. The graves of the war heroes are decorated with flowers.

May is a beautiful month. The snow and ice have melted and it is not too hot! So, it is a good

time to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate in a number of ways. I especially love the sun on my

face, long drives and cool nights.
